Employee Spotlight: Dave Hawking, Vice President of Distribution and Sales
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Vice President of Distribution and Sales, Dave Hawking. Dave has been with the company for an impressive 29 years. He has worn many hats during his tenure with TydenBrooks such as team leader, national sales manager, and his current role, vice president of distribution and sales. During our conversation with Dave, he gave us great insight into how the company has evolved over the years and his hopes for the future of TydenBrooks. We learned that Dave’s job consists of a three-pronged structure; how he and his team work together to build and strengthen distributor relationships; and we also got a peek into his life outside of TydenBrooks with his family and hobbies.
In the Beginning
Graduating from St. Norbert College in Wisconsin, Dave began his career in industrial sales. Dave joined E.J. Brooks Company in February 1986 after answering a newspaper ad. His first position with the company was in sales management where he managed multiple teams. When Dave began, the company was focused mainly on the electric utility industry until in 1995, when It split into two groups: the electric utility group and the transportation products group.
From 1995 until the early 2000s, Dave worked in the electric utility group before being made a team leader, a new position that put Dave in charge of both accounts and sales teams. In April 2004, Dave was promoted to national sales manager, where he worked through the merger of TydenBrammall into TydenBrooks as well as the acquisition of Stoffel seals.
His Current Role
Dave’s current position as vice president of distribution and sales is a hybrid role. He describes his role as a “three-pronged approach.” Dave's position combines working with existing distribution partners for growth, adding new partners in industry spaces that we think makes sense, and managing part of the sales force to assist the SVP of Sales.
“There is no such thing as a typical day on the job,” Dave said. “Every day is different depending on what needs doing.” Some days Dave will be in the office, returning emails and making phone calls; and other days he will be on the road travelling to visit with distributors or attend trade shows. Dave also participates in training sessions for his sales teams, making sure they have everything they need to be as effective as they can be. Like other aspects of TydenBrooks, teamwork plays a significant role in the success of distributor relationships and sales. “Everyone is very supportive of each other, and everyone in all of the departments in the company are working hard to do a good job,” Dave said.
Dave has grown professionally over his nearly 30 years with TydenBrooks, and he attributes much of this to having a team that teaches and learns together. When he first began his career, he was fortunate to have thorough, ongoing training. “I was able to take advantage of several courses and seminars that the company directed me to do and that was extremely beneficial,” Dave said. He also continues to educate himself through reading, self-learning, and strengthening the skills he uses daily.
Dave has a very positive outlook for the future of TydenBrooks. He looks forward to helping the company continue to meet challenges; set and achieve goals; and continue to grow through innovation. “In a learning course I took years ago, I heard a quote that I have carried with me; ‘A sales manager has two jobs; grow the business and grow the people’ and that is what I try to do.” Dave said.
Dave’s ultimate goal is to help ensure TydenBrooks remains the premier global brand in the industry. He knows TydenBrooks excels in knowledge, value, quality, and customer service; and these qualities will continue to keep people thinking of TydenBrooks when they think of their security seals needs.
Dave also looks forward to continuing to develop and strengthen his skills and that of those around him so they can continue delivering the best possible service to their customers.
About Dave Hawking
Outside of TydenBrooks, Dave loves spending time with his family. He and his wife recently celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary. They have two children, a son and a daughter, who live close by and visit often. A few years back, they had a new house built; and he and his wife love cooking and grilling and often host dinner parties for their family and friends. Dave is an avid reader, “I challenge myself to read a book a month,” he said. In addition to spending time with family and friends, he enjoys going golfing. “If I’m having a bad game, which is more often than not,” Dave said, “then I just work on my tan.”
As you might have guessed from Dave's comments, he is not only an excellent example of a dedicated and hard-working employee, but Dave's keen intellect and sense of humor keep the entire TydenBrooks team on their toes as well as smiling daily. TydenBrooks is very grateful to have Dave Hawking share his knowledge and help them reach their goals with distributors.
